Walnut Desk

Fall 2014

Skills: Furniture Design, Woodshop

Tools: Wood Lathe, Planar/Joiner, Hand Plane

The Council for the Arts at MIT Grants Committee reviewed my application and awarded me a grant towards the materials for this project.  I designed a simple desk to draw the focus to the raw beauty of the walnut.  I turned each desk leg on the wood lathe, hand planed the desk top, and created a mortis and tenon joint between each leg and apron piece.

After spending hours sanding the desk top by hand and with an orbital sander, I finished the wood with danish oil.  The top is fixed to the apron with three figure-eight fasteners to allow for expansion and contraction of the wood through the New England seasons.
